Having loved the film "Spellbound", I was intrigued by this idea and as usual, wanted to read the book before seeing the film. It begins well, and is particularly effective at portraying Eliza's skill with spelling. It also does a good job of explaining the family's oddities. However, I found the foray into Jewish mysticism a disappointing turn and wished it had stuck with the spelling bee idea.
