I have read a little bit of Hiaasen before and find him really funny and great voice for environmental action. I know that both of his children's books (Hoot and Flush) have gotten a ton of press so I look forward to this one. Peace!

My second Hiaasen read and a really lovely one too! No wonder this book gets so much press! The story is quite comical with a young, home-sick boy having to stop an evil Pancake House company from crushing a burrowing owl nest. Throughout the plot there is comic mischief and some funny, satiric dialogue about bullies and middle school. You won't find any of Hiaasen's really sick satire agaisnt Florida here though, the state actually getting romaticized here.
The plot is a bit fomulactic. Whenever a kid show/entertainment venue does an environmental episode/focus it either does littering or saving cute animals. The book does little to explain the complicated situation of our environmental crisis and just focuses on charimastic fauna. However, this is a kid's book and it was stories just like that that got me into the movement and eventually learning that it is not just saving the pandas, but also driving less, consuming less, buying local, etc. Enough of that aside...

If I had kids I would make them read this book. Pretty funny and very visual, anything Hiaasen choses to describe comes off the page. The morals are belabored from beginning to end, but the exectuion of them isn't saccharine. Just a neat book. Peace!
