I really enjoyed this quirky collection of short stories, based on crazy tabloid newspaper stories. One of the blurbs on the back calls it 'American magical realism' and I think that's pretty accurate. Here in Britain, 'tabloid' connotes a newspaper like The Sun--it may take a hysterical slant on the news, but it still reports it semi-faithfully. In the U.S., though, a tabloid is a paper full of wacky made-up stories along the lines of 'Bat boy born to 85-year-old-woman' etc.
I lent this to a friend and she couldn't get into it--but I ate it up. Hopefully you will too!
