Aha! I have located the first in the Inspector Felse series! I'm glad I popped into the other room of the FotL sale today. :-)

I have promised this to AnnaKY as a loan, as I won't be able to read it for a little while yet.

I was introduced to the George Felse series in a roundabout way, and I had not yet read the first book in the series. I have been thinking lately that I should start with that one and go through the rest chronolgically, reading both the ones I have read before as well as the ones I haven't read yet. So, I was very happy to find stinalyn's list of registered books contained this one, and that she was willing to lend it to me.
This is a long book - much longer than I am able to do in one sitting, which was frustrating, since I wanted to solve the mystery before I went to bed. However, I got up this morning and finished it, and it was well worth the wait. I can't really say much about the plot without giving away the ending, so I won't. I enjoy the elements of mystery and suspense, but I think what I like most about Ellis Peters' books is the character development that occurs over the individual novel as well as throughout the series. Her sense of justice is much like my own, and that appeals to me, also.
I'm sending it back to stinalyn tomorrow. Hope she enjoys it as much as I did.

Back home safe and sound. I'm glad you liked it, Anna, and I hope I get the opportunity to read it soon. :-)

I've read a few of the later books in this series, so I enjoyed reading the beginning of it all. The characters were all done extremely well, and I love the author's style. She really brought to life the post-war social issues that haunted England in the 1950s. I did think the puzzle was too easy. I didn't grasp the exact significance of the pheasants, but about halfway through the book, I had a good 85% of the plot twists figured out.
I'm sending this off in the Mensa Mystery Swap.
