Back cover text:
With the same stunning blend of prophecy and social satire she brought to her classic The Handmaid's Tale, Margaret Atwood gives us a keenly prescient novel about the futre of humanity--and its present.
Humanity here equals Snowman, and in Snowman's recollections Atwood re-creates a time much like our own, when a boy named Jimmy loved an elusive, damaged girl called Oryx and a sardonic genius called Crake. But now Snowman is alone, and as we learn why we also learn about a world that could become ours one day.
This book was a Booker Prize finalist. I read it sometime last year and then loaned it to my dad (I just got it back this weekend).
Probably because The Handmaid's Tale is one of my favorite books and I love Margaret Atwood, I was a little disappointed with this book. It was good, but not as good as The Handmaid's Tale.
My dad reports that he liked it up until the ending.
I'm going to put this one aside for a literary fiction book box.

Megami's Decade of Literary Fiction book box arrived today. I'm putting this book into it and I'll be sending it along shortly to find a new reader.
Thank you so much for sending this book - i have really been wanting to read it! And thanks for all the other books, bookmarks and the card!!
Much like 'The Handmaid's Tale' this book tells the story of an all-too-believable dystopian future, believable because Atwood takes contemporary issues and follows them into the future. This story is told by Snowman, potentially the last human being left on Earth after an armageddon brought about by an apocolyptic plague.
The book moves from this future where Snowman is left to fend for himself in a post-Armageddon future, and his past, with the author slowly bringing the two together, showing the reader how this future could have come to being.
It is Atwood's skill as a writer that both macro and micro narratives work: the reader is interested in each chapter, in the 'day-to-day' presented whether it be in Snowman's past or present; and also the over-arching story, being drawn along to find out how these horrid things could have happened.
While set in a future brought about by genetic engineering and corporate greed taken to their awful zenith, this is not really sci-fi. Un-nervingly, it is simply a believable future, horrific not because of the unbelievable awfulness of it, but because it is all too believable.

Rescued from the Sci-Fi book bag.
Not sure what to make of this one as I don't read many books of this type. The story line was interesting enough and yes it's always a possibility post-apocalyptically, but then there are that many possibilities going around.
Still, an interesting read.

Picked up at the PO on way to Qld
It's amazing how realistic an imaginary future can look, seeing where our society could go if unchecked in some ways and not others. Pretty scary too!
