Oranges

Wonderful story of the history and current status of oranges in the world. Wish it were more current. Typical great writing by McPhee, clear and succinct, with a touch of humor.

This is just another example of why bookcrossing is so great! ds3233 saw my forum post about this book, also wanted to read it and picked it up for BOTH of us when she saw it at a garage sale! She sent it to me as a RABCK.
Being the plant (and food!) geek that I am, I'm really looking forward to this one. :) Thanks ds3233!

What an interesting book! :) Thank you ds3233 for sharing it with me!
Maybe it is just the season, but every time he made a reference to the "Parson Brown" variety of orange, I kept thinking of "Winter Wonderland". LOL. I found the botany information interesting, especially the parts about how oranges turn orange (and back to green! Who knew?!) and how the placement on the tree can affect its sweetness.
Like all McPhee's books, this was really interesting, but I think I would have enjoyed it even more if the information was more current and he had included more information on the orange industry itself and on the orchard/grove (picking, growing...) processes.

This is the first one of McPhee's books that I've read. I wasn't going to read this one, since it is rather out-of-date. But then I saw mention of this author in the forums (that he's very good), and I didn't want to miss this opportunity to read one of his books (esp. since it's such a short one). So I gave it a quick read.
All the other readers' comments apply. I have only one thing to add: The sex lives of citrus fruit - who knew? Interesting tidbit.
Thanks to DS3233 and Dicentragirl for sharing this book. It will be going into my "Books about Things" bookbox, which will be on its way out the door very soon!
