Thank you so much for sending this book on to me, Chevygoddess. My niece, Shadow-luvs-J, will have a chance to read it after I finish it.
How did I miss reading this book earlier? It is a very powerful and important book. I love that the story focuses on one of the positive events that occurred during the occupation of the Nazis. Neighbors and friends came together and helped their Jewish neighbors. It is astonishing that almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark was smuggled to Sweden.
The courage and bravery of Annemarie, Ellen and their families is so touching. Lois Lowry has always written amazing books and this was yet another. I am grateful that I was able to read this book. Thank you Chevygoddess for passing this book onto me.
Book Description
Ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her best friend Ellen Rosen often think about life before the war. But it's now 1943 and their life in Copenhagen is filled with school, food shortages, and the Nazi soldiers marching in their town.
The Nazi won't stop. The Jews of Denmark are being "relocated," so Ellen moves in with the Johansens and pretends to be part of the family.
Then Annemarie is asked to go on a dangerous mission. Somehow she must find the strength and courage to save her best friend's life. There's no turning back now.
My niece, Shadow-luvs-J, let me know that she read this book in school. Instead this book is off to magicjessnrach to fulfill a Holiday Wish.
Don’t forget to check out Lois Lowry’s website. Here is the website for a great teaching guide article on this book.
This book was mailed out on January 4, 2006.

Thanks so much for this book. Jess borrowed it from the library a couple of years ago and loved it. We have been looking for a copy ever since so that Maddy and EJ can read it too.
