Laurie Colwin was a wonderful, witty writer, a sort of outrageous Jane Austen of New York. I thoroughly enjoyed her novels back in the 1990s. Sadly, there will be no more. Colwin died in her 40s about ten years ago. It is a devastating loss to American fiction--and non-fiction too (Colwin wrote great essays about food and other things). But what she left remains. I am always happy to introduce her work to new readers. She really deserves more attention. I hope that this copy of Shine On, Bright and Dangerous object will go far. This is a story of a woman's survival. Her husband, a dynamic young lawyer, is more attracted to risk than he is to life. When his hubris kills him, Colwin's protagonist must pick up the pieces of her own life. This is a novel about being young and living to tell the tale.

This looks like a great book. Thank you for sharing it with me and thanks for sticking the bookmark inside.
The premise in your review sounds very interesting. I will surely be reading it soon and looking for someone else to pass it on to when I am done.
THANKS!

This book was a little slow to take off for me, but once it did, it was a great read. I have been fortunate enough not to loose anyone close to me as the main character in this story did. What is interesting is that the few times I have been touch by grief, I had feelings very similiar to the main characters. I picked out this passage that really resonated with me.

"If I was chipper it would look forced. If I was quiet I would seem mournful. I did not want my feelings misjudged or misappropriated, and I wanted them not to get in the way; I wanted my feelings to myself."

I have no particular plans for this book as of yet, but I do intend to pass it on soon somehow. I will update with a new journal entry when I decide.

Thanks for sharing this with me Cordelia-anne.

I like to do themed type releases, so I left this book at the grocery store. I propped it up on the hooks where they were selling knives, shredders, and slicers. I figure these are Bright and Dangerous Objects.
