I am one of the employees of Crumbs, and picked Birdsong up off the counter. When I'm done reading it I'll probably leave it on a train somewhere, or in a service station. I have some travelling to do this month! Fran (I'll be joining BookCrossings as soon as my computer stops crashing every time I try)

'Birdsong' was given to my Mum to drop off (she'd already read it) on her train ride home. She left it next to a young man on the second seat from the back, second carriage - but he seemed very engrossed in the newspaper!

I thought this was a very well written book, and it is very powerful, though I ofund the balance between the importance of the affair, the war and the 70's a little bit off. Though it did affect me greatly, I think the novel was undermined by all the recent events connected to remembrance day, such as programmes like "The Last Tommy" which caused me to compare the book very starkly with reality, and so pick up on the more contrived sections (such as the ending, which annoyed me slightly.) If I had read 'Birdsong' before Nov. 11, I'd be singing it's praises, and I don't doubt that when I reread it (which I will) I'll be even more hooked. I certainly plan to try some more Sebastian Faulks.
I have word from my Mum that a nice young man on the train picked the book up, read the Bookcrossing details, and then solidly had his head in the pages until Chester. So it's been picked up... just waiting for it to be registered caught. Maybe he's waiting till he's finished reading it?
