Bought this one just because it's a Ben Elton.

"The war on the drugs has been lost. The simple fact is that the whole world is rapidly becoming one vast criminal network. From pop stars and royal princes to crack whores and street kids, from the Groucho Club toilets to the poppy fields of Afghanistan, we are all partners in crime.

High society is a story about Britain today, a criminal nation in which everybody is either breaking the law or knows people who do. It takes the reader on a hilarious, heartbreaking and terrifying journey through the kaleidoscope world that the law has created and from which the law offers no protection."

I just got this one fron yogie, so I haven't had time to read it yet, but I probably will do so soon.

Now I have read it and sent it back to yogie.
It was a very intersting book that gave an alternative view on drugs and also had quite a few intrigues in it:) It was written in a funny way, with some words spelled as you pronounce them, not as they are supposed to be spelled.

Now that I've read it I can only say that it was a great book.
It was written in quite a different way than many other books I've read, since many words were spelled as they are pronounced, and some people had worse accents than others. By writing that way I think each person gets a much more vivid personality, you can almost hear how they sound.

The book also brings up a very important issue, drugs, and from a different angle than the one that at least I am used to.
A MP in Britain thinks that most drugs should be legalized, he says that if they are, there would be no market for dealers, and if you buy drugs legally it's much easier to discover addiction, and have clean needles and so on.
That is a point of view that was new to me until I read the book.

There are sidestorys as well, like that the MP has a love affair, and that a famous pop star uses drugs and fools around, seemingly happy, but inside he's falling apart.

Sincce the book brings up such an interesting question, is written in such a good and also humorous way it is great fun to read and I give it an 8.

And the book is back with me! :)

This book is truly provocative. It's almost as if I think legalizing drugs is a great idea, and I'm anything BUT drug liberal. This book is very tragic when we get to see how drugs can ruin peoples lives and then have nowhere to go when they finally realize something needs to be done -- they're outside the system that says it wants to protect them and there's nothing they can do.
One thing that really confused me was how the stories were so short and the book kept jumping back and forth. That confused me a couple of times. The stories were intertwined, however, and that made it much easier to follow the main story.

This book is off to LESEHEST in Norway as a part of a trade.

I'll give this book an 8, just like yogie. The book discussed a lot of difficult issues; and I found it a very interesting read. The style of writing helped making the persons in the book feel real.

Now off to BOKWORMY, for winning my RABCK-drawing a while a go...

I'll definitly read more books from Elton; I really liked this book :)

This book really got me thinking about the effects of legalizing drugs. The pros and cons. Another great book by Ben Elton. I really love his writing style!
