"Hoot" is, well, a hoot!

This is a story about three smart kids, a bully, Florida cops and developers, and, (oh yes), some owls. Very Florida. Very funny!

Winner of the Newberry Honor Award for children's fiction. Even though it was written primarily for kids, this eco-friendly story is fun for ALL ages.

Am offering as a bookray :). Happy reading!

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. My son has been nuts about owls since he was a year and half old. While he's still too young (at age 3 1/2) to sit through me reading this book, I plan to get a copy for my PC collection to read to him in a few years. He and I do have a date to see the upcoming movie version.

Here in the Bay Area we have another species of burrowing owls that have put the stop to some local construction (including at the Stanford campus) so the story rang true. While the "running boy" seems a bit of stretch for a character, Beatrice, Roy and Dana rounded out the lot as believeable middle school kids (for the good and bad). The story is a quick read, fairly predictable but ultimately satisfying.

For more information about the burrowing owls in Florida, see the Florida Burrowing Owl Project.

Thanks for sharing! Arrived safely in very nice condition and I'll get to it as soon as I finish the bookray in front of it...

ETA: Still reading as of 4/17/06. I thought this was going to be a quicker read, but I'm reading is more slowly because I'm enjoying it and am over 1/2 way done now. Sorry for the delay, I do have Napper's address and will send out upon finishing. Thanks for your patience!

Very cute book. I just saw an ad for the movie, coming to theatres May 5th, so I sped-read the rest. I think it will translate well to the screen. I've got the book packed up and ready to mail.

One thing that *did* bother me was the use of profanity (one word, a "milder" one) that didn't seem needed in a children's book. Otherwise it was a light, semi-predictable read I would recommend to others.

I just finished a Carl Hiaasen over the weekend! I am psyched to read this, thanks!

Journal Entry 10 by napper from Brooklyn, New York USA on Thursday, May 18, 2006
I was having a rough week, and this, as most Hiassen books do, really helped lift my mood. Very funny, very suspenseful. I love Hiassen's world where the bad guys get what's coming to them.

One thing that was VERY unusual to me was that the protagonist's parents were understanding and "cool." It seems that in so many kids books, the parents just don't get it and the kid never tells them ANYTHING! :)

I am mailing this off to librarymousie!

Journal Entry 11 by librarymousie from Portsmouth, New Hampshire USA on Tuesday, June 6, 2006
First, my apologies for not journaling this sooner--it somehow ended up in one of my many piles of moving clutter and wasn't opened right away.

I really enjoyed this, but I really enjoy Hiaasen's novels for grown-ups and this book shares many of the same elements: real issues, quirky characters, and an offbeat sense of justice and retribution--but minus the sex and bad language. Am PMing the next in line and hope to have this moving by week's end.

So sorry this has taken so long to get moving. I've heard from Rudifun23 and this will go Global Priority Mail to the UK this afternoon.

Loved it, must make an effort to read more children's fiction. Just reading the notes above and very pleased to hear there's a movie out, can't wait to see it over here.
Didn't notice any profanity though and the book is wrapped and about to be posted. Go on, what was the rude word? ;-)

I’ve only read one book by this author (Skinny Dip) and I really liked its humour and quirkiness so I was looking forward to seeing how Hiaasen tackled a children’s book. I have to say I was a bit disappointed. It was so simply written that it seemed to be aimed at very young children, maybe 7 or 8 years old, but it was quite a long book for that age group. It was very predictable and Hiaasen’s humour had almost completely disappeared. I appreciate any book that involves young readers with the preservation of the environment but we actually found out very little about the owls. That said, Roy was an interesting character and with some good actors, it will probably make a good film so I’ll look out for that. More owl action wanted though!
Posted on to Katayoun this morning.

starting it, i have a soft spot for owls since this summer at the country side place, we had a family and two kids staying with us!! really two kids, it was so exciting! they were pretty small and would come out and sit on a tree during the day, though i suppose it was because of the heat. you can see a picture of our guests
