I bought this book on Tuesday and can't wait to read it.

Synopsis from Amazon:

From the national bestselling author of PLAIN TRUTH comes an acclaimed, richly atmospheric novel about a teacher undone by a disturbing modern-day witch hunt. Tall, blonde and handsome, Jack McBride was once a beloved teacher and football coach at a girl's school, until a student's crush sparked a powder-keg of accusation and robbed him of his career and reputation. Now after a devastatingly public ordeal that left him with an eight-month jail sentence and no job, Jack resolves to pick up the pieces of his life; taking a job washing dishes at Addie Peabody's diner, and slowly forming a relationship with her. But just when it seems like his life is back on track, Jack finds himself the object of fresh accusations of rape brought on by a coven of bewitching teenage girls from Salem Falls, and history repeats itself as Jack's hidden past catches up with him. In a sleepy hamlet haunted by enduring love and wicked deceit, Picoult masterfully leads readers toward a truly shocking finale.

Like the other Jodi Picoult books I've read, this one was unputdownable. I read it in two sittings over the weekend, I was hooked from the first page and couldn't wait to find out what happened. The characters were all so well written and believable, Jodi Picoult has a real knack for this. It was nice to see characters from a previous book pop up here too, it took me a while to place them but it was great to read more about their lives as well. I thought the wicca plotline was really well handled, a friend of mine is a pagan and is often judged badly because of it. It was nice to see a book handle it sensitively and well.

All in all a great book. :o)

Once again Jodi Picoult entrapped me into her story line so that I didn't want to stop reading. I found myself sneaking upstairs to the bedroom to read another chapter when I should have been doing boring things like cooking the kids tea :-)
Thanks for sharing this book .....I can't wait to read another of her books.
I'm not posting this book out until after Christmas now in case it gets caught up in the sorting office over the holiday period

Journal Entry 7 by herrgirl from Vale of White Horse, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, January 4, 2006
Oh, joy! Two ring books arrived today and one yesterday. Now I have to decide which order I should read them! Thanks, Vespa, for sending this on, and also for the chocolate bars - and so soon after Christmas too.

What a good read this book is, like those above I couldn't put it down. With a plot that is loosely based on Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, Salem Falls draws upon the same themes: innocent people being falsely accused of horrific crimes, accusations being hurled recklessly, young women lying to get themselves out of trouble.

This was my second Jodi Picoult book and I intend to read them all. Thanks, sunflowergirl, for sharing it. It will be on its way to scotsbookie as soon as I get an address.

Journal Entry 9 by scotsbookie from Peebles, Scotland United Kingdom on Monday, January 16, 2006
Thank you herrgirl, arrived safely with me this morning. It is next up on mount TBR.

Another great book by Jodi Picoult. False accusations against Jack, history repeating itself for him. It's difficult to say more without putting in spolers for other readers so that's all I'll say.

Thank you sunflowergirl for putting this out on a ring.

Will send out to Nocton4 within the next couple of days.

I'm sorry but I really couldn't get into this one. I've now read 4 Picault novels fairly close together and the writing style is beginning to grate. I ended up skimming it and don't think I'll be reading any more by this author.

Sending on to Rillaith as soon as I get an address.

Journal Entry 16 by Rillaith from Wokingham, Berkshire United Kingdom on Thursday, April 6, 2006
Arrived yesterday, looking forward to reading this once I finish my current book.

Wonderful book. Despite dealing with a fairly tough topic, it was a very easy and engaging read, and I found it very hard indeed to put down once I started. Thank you for sharing!

Ready to go to Sunlightbub once I have an address.

I finished this within a couple of days as it really is a book that can't be put down. Picoult's writing style does irritate me at times though, which is why it's just an 8!

Arrived today.

A couple in front of it, will try to get to it in the next week.

Journal Entry 27 by abrokenstarr from Reading, Berkshire United Kingdom on Thursday, August 17, 2006
Wow. I wasn't going to read this until I had finished The Poisonwood Bible, but something in it just called to me. I've been curious about Jodi Picoult for some time, and have not been disappointed. It was powerful. This one in particular interested me - I'm a teacher, and wondered where that storyline was going. I also LOVE the Crucible, and could see the links there without doing anymore than reading the blurb, which interested me.

I did see some things before they happened - the end of the book, the thing with Charlie, but that just made me feel smug rather than irritated that I had solved it.

I will try to see if I can get an address in time to send it tomorrow morning. If not it will have to wait until I get back from holiday.

Journal Entry 29 by chelseagirl from Faringdon, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Monday, August 28, 2006
Received safely, many thanks. I've read a few Picoults now and really love her style, so I'm looking forward to sitting down with this one.

Journal Entry 30 by chelseagirl from Faringdon, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Monday, September 18, 2006
I've now read three or four Picoult books in a short space of time and I'm starting to realise that most of the plot lines are very similar - crime of an emotional nature takes place, ensuing court case etc - and as result they are starting to get a little tiresome and repetitive. I do like this author and will get round to reading the rest of her works sometime, but I think I need a bit of a break, otherwise I'm not going to get any pleasure from reading them.

Having said that, this was an enjoyable book on a tough topic. I saw a few of the twists coming, but not the final one, which was a bit of a shock. The characters were all strong although I did find the relationship between Addie and Jack rather unbelievalbe, it just seemed to happen too quickly considering everything they'd gone through, with little analysis of it. However, i did enjoy this - thanks for sharing!

I'll pass this on to dsc as soon as I have an address.

Journal Entry 31 by dsc from Chester, Cheshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, October 17, 2006
Book received safe & sound this morning, thanks.

Journal Entry 32 by dsc from Chester, Cheshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, October 18, 2006
I have decided to pass this book on to the next person unread. I have just abandoned another Picoult and am reluctant to try another one at this stage, which is a shame because the first book of hers that I read was very good. Perhaps I will revisit this in the future.

Journal Entry 33 by mellowdaisy on Thursday, October 26, 2006
This arrived today, thank you to dsc for sending it on to me. I will hopefully get round to it soon, I have a couple of ring books before it.

Journal Entry 34 by mellowdaisy on Saturday, December 9, 2006
I actually finished this on Wednesday just gone but couldn't journal it as I was in Italy!

I read this after reading a classic literature novel which was a bit heavy going so it was with ease that I slipped straight into the story of this book. I have read a few of Jodi Picoult's books so I am familiar with the similar story lines but as I haven't read one in a little while it didn't bug me too much. I agree that the relationship between Addie and Jack was a bit too easy considering their histories but I was rooting for them nonetheless. I even had an inkling about the last little twist and had to read the last few sentences again to make sure I was right!

All in all it was a very enjoyable read. I have PMed firegirl for an address and will send this on as soon as I receive it.

Journal Entry 35 by mellowdaisy on Tuesday, December 12, 2006
This book was sent to Firegirl today by surface mail.

Journal Entry 36 by Firegirl from Tucson, Arizona USA on Monday, February 5, 2007
Arrived safely today! I didn't realize this was supposed to be a UK-only bookring -- thanks so much to Sunflowergirl and Mellowdaisy for including me even though I'm "across the pond". I'll get it ASAP; if Picoult's past books are any indication, I should finish it quickly and be able to send it home to Sunflowergirl very soon.

Journal Entry 37 by Firegirl from Tucson, Arizona USA on Friday, February 9, 2007
As I expected, I tore through this in two days. If I ever write a book, I hope I do it as fluidly as Picoult. It never ceases to amaze me that I can barrel through 400+ pages so quickly; I certainly don't know how she does it.

I did enjoy this though it didn't seem to prompt heavy discussion like the other works of hers I have read. I agree with Sunflowergirl that the Pagan/Wiccan angle was handled very well. I knew many practicing pagans when I was growing up (not so many now, but still a few) and Picoult definitely paints a fair picture.

I too saw the very end coming a mile away, but wasn't bothered by "figuring it out" as it didn't take anything away from the story for me. I thought, when it was finally revealed, that it might stir a least a little bit of sympathy in me for Gillian's character, but it didn't. In fact, I didn't find any of the girls particularly likeable or sympathic, which is an interesting twist in a teenage rape story.

All in all, a good read, recommended for those who like Picoult's work, but not, in my opinion, her best book. Thanks again for letting me read this! I'll send it back to Sunflowergirl as soon as I have an address.

Journal Entry 38 by sunflowergirl from Carlisle, Cumbria United Kingdom on Friday, April 20, 2007
This book arrived home safely this morning, thanks so much to firegirl for returning it to me. Thanks also to everyone who took part in this very successful ring, I'm glad you all enjoyed the book. :o)

Setting this book to AVL now in case there's anyone else out there who wants to read it.

I hope you enjoy your Not So Secret Summer Solstice Surprise 2008 parcel! I see that this book is on your wishlist; I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I (and the people on the bookring for it) did.

Journal Entry 40 by molekilby from Brithdir, Wales United Kingdom on Saturday, June 21, 2008
Arrived last week and opened today. Thank you sunflowergirl for the package.

I have not read any Jodi Picoult books as yet as I've always classed them as leaning towards chcik lit and then just dealing with emotional issues (not my type of book). However, I think I should give some of them a go and make a more informed decision.

Journal Entry 41 by molekilby from Brithdir, Wales United Kingdom on Monday, July 7, 2008
This was my first Picoult book, and I can certainly see why she is a popular author. I found the storyline engaging and very easy to read. having now read the journal entries I think I have to agree with most of them, and would not want to have a Picoultfest and read several in a short space of time.

At times i found the subject matter very disturbing. The author covers most angles and I kept thinking how would I fare/stand in this? One line of dialogue (not sure who said it) came back again and again that it comes down to who you believe, which is a very tough thought to consider. I also watched Atonement over the weekend which probably reinforced the themes.

I will read further Picoult's and I thank sunflowergirl for allowing me to read this one.

Journal Entry 42 by Ladkyis from Newport, Wales United Kingdom on Saturday, August 16, 2008
received from MOlekilby as part of the after 2000 virtual book box on BCuk extra. I have read one other Jodi Picoult that was very good and very thought provoking. I hope this one compares well.
