This is a most peculiar novel. Its setting and its mood are reminiscent of The Shipping News, but it tells a much colder tale of a more marginal existence.

Fabian Vas is a painter of birds in Witless Bay, Newfoundland, an apprentice by mail of a critical artistic mentor he never meets. He makes a living by selling pictures to specialist birdwatching journals and working in the shipyard. There is much else to tell, but let Fabian tell you himself.

I'm the bookmoocher that woosang sent The Bird Artist to in Georgia, USA. My book arrived today and I'm quite pleased with it - it looks really good! I plan to read it. I went ahead and "joined" BookCrossing and may decide to participate. I really like the concept and it seems to be quite successful. Thanks woosang for the book and for - without knowing it - encouraging me to look into BookCrossing seriously this time :)

This is the type of book that will stay with me for quite awhile - that fact speaks to the skill and talent of the writer. Fabian Vas and Margaret and all the other citizens of Witless Bay are not to be read lightly and forgotten. Read The Bird Artist with care and the knowing that it will become a part of you. I think I want to keep this book for awhile and will probably read more by the same author.
