Very different from the author's other books
Picked up at tonight's meetup.

Has all the essential elements of a melodrama: beautiful Rosamond has been brought up on an island away from society, and is seduced by a mysterious stranger, who later turns out not to be the gentleman he seems. In trying to escape his clutches, Rosamond encounters everything from convent life to dreadful murders to kindly seamstresses to escaped convicts to actresses with hearts of gold to lunatic aslyums to shipwrecks to elderly Counts in need of a wife. And of course it all ends in tears. Wonderfully over the top, and I'm sure terribly shocking at the time, but now just great fun to read.
