The Copper Beech
3 journalers for this copy...
In the Irish town of Schancarrig, the young people carve their initials--and those of their loves-into the copper beech tree in front of the schoolhouse. But not even Father Gunn, the parish priest, who knows most of what goes on behind Shancarrig''s closed doors, or Dr. Jims, the village doctor, who knows all the rest, realizes that not everything in the placid village is what it seems.
I love the way Maeve Binchy writes. This book was one of my favourites. She's so tender and always manages to have a bit of a mystery. Glad I picked this one up.

This arrived in the post today, a lovely surprise, thanks queenfrog! Yes, we had a huge old Copper Beech tree in front of our house when I was a child, hence the special memories for me.

I held onto this for way too long before reading it, but enjoyed it so much, thankyou Queenfrog! It's a lovely book, detailing the lives of people in a small Irish village - you see them and their happenings all from different angles as the stories mingle and gradually unfold. It's a reminder that we can never really know what goes on in people's lives. Its an ultimately optimistic story with a fitting ending that leaves the reader feeling good.
