Before this book was picked by my book club as a meeting topic, I had only previously read Disgrace, which whilst OK was not a great book.

I picked this book up with trepidation, expecting a fight to the end to complete it.

But, I now know why Coetzee won the Nobel prize. This book is fantastic but leaves as many questions hanging at the end as it resolves. Here is a list of some of the topics discussed at the meeting.

What is the book about? Is it a straight forward story (possibly, in that case where is it set and when), is it a parable about the moral choices and decisions of men (possibly is the protagonist then a good man, a bad man, does he absolve himself in the end), is it a metaphor of empire (which empire? Historical? England? Spain? Modern? USA), is it a metaphor about male sexuality (possibly? Does the character acheive closure and come to terms with his aging and loss of youthful vigour?)

The answer to all the above is YES.

Re-read this book for The Nobel Spiral.

All I can do it re-iterate how impressed I am with this book. An outstanding piece of fiction written by a master of the craft at the height of his powers.

I really enjoyed reading this. Coetzee managed to express complex thoughts in simple and thoughtful language. I've read Disgrace but didn't really take to that - this I did. Thanks Marko167 for sending it to me. I look forward to the next!

Having only read 'Disgrace' by this author before (and felt similarly to previous reviewers) I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book. Now that I've finished it I'm glad that I tried it - It was much more accessible than 'Disgrace' and asked a lot of questions some of which I'm still not sure I know the answer to.

Thanks all for sharing. I'm looking forward to the rest of the spiral and other books I may not have considered reading myself. I have katrinat's address and will get this book in the post to her on Tuesday.

I really liked reading this book. The story doesn't make you very happy, but it does makes you think about how people treat each other.

I put the book on the mail to Fotomiep today.

What a great book, finished it almost in one go. I didn't like the main character, what a spineless man that is. But I believe one must be a really good writer to let me dislike the main characters, it is very well writen.

I'll send it on to the next reader shortly.

Being a Greek I was intrigued by the title
as Coetzee has borrowed it from the same titled
poem by the Greek poet C.P.Cavafy
(you can read it here:
http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/jod/texts/cavafy.html)
and I am glad to say
that he didn't disappoint me.

Although the inspiration of his book
is obviously the Apartheid in South Africa
Coetzee manages to eschew the limitations
of a specific place and time by raising
some very important and difficult for all
places and times and especially for our
Modern Times

Something to which all writers aspire,
but only the greatest achieve.

Once I got into the book (and stopped looking for a direct pointer to Apartheid) I really liked it. It reminds you of what it means to be 'civilized' and how fragile 'civilization' is.

Once I get Bibliocrates address, it will be on its way across the big pond.

I finished the book a few minutes ago.

I had a hard time getting into the book. It may not have been the right book for me at this time.

The stor was dense with meanings. I agree that there is much to be gained and I am glad that I didn't give up before I completed it.

Thanks for including me
