What a really lovely book! The style is so beautifully descriptive that you can so easily imagine the scenes in your head. A little bit unusual in that it moves around to different times in Eve's life. Right from the start you are aware of happenings later in her life and you just want to keep reading to find out how it all takes place. I'm so pleased I joined this bookring thank you wilksie for starting it off.

I will send it off to cats-eye now.

I really loved this book! The author's vivid descriptions of rural Wales made me feel like I was there inside the story, and the characters were well rounded and believable. I am amazed that this was Susan Fletcher's first novel (where has she been hiding?!), and it absolutely deserved the honour of the Whitbread Award it has received. I will look forward to more books from her, and try hard not to be jealous of one so talented and *young* (she's in her mid-twentys I believe) ;-)
Thanks for sharing this little gem, wilksie - I will post it out to scotsbookie in the next day or two....

*edited to add - posted 15/12/05*

This is a replacement for the original book that seems to have been lost in the post. I'm sending it off to scotsbookie today - I hope it has better luck :-)

Journal Entry 8 by scotsbookie from Peebles, Scotland United Kingdom on Thursday, January 26, 2006
Arrived safely with me today. I am reading another ring at the moment so this is top of TBR pile. Thank you wilksie.

Journal Entry 9 by scotsbookie from Peebles, Scotland United Kingdom on Tuesday, February 14, 2006
Although I enjoyed the story & the wonderful descriptions of the Welsh countryside I didn't really engage with the characters in the book. I felt that I didn't get under the surface of the story or get to care about the characters. A bit of a disappoint for me as I was really looking forward to reading it.

Thank you wilksie for ringing the book.

PM'd flanners for her details.

Journal Entry 10 by scotsbookie from Peebles, Scotland United Kingdom on Monday, February 20, 2006
Posted the afternoon 20 Feb 2006 to Flanners. Sorry about the delay but this grotty cold has really been getting me down.

Journal Entry 11 by flanners from Havant, Hampshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, February 22, 2006
Received safely today from scotsbookie who has my commiserations - I too have had this ferocious bug that seems to be doing the rounds. Hope you're feeling better.

Wonderfully atmospheric read. I liked the fact that it wasn't all cut and dried. I think she'll go on to even bigger and better things - a hugely talented writer.

And what a very attractive label, wilksie - I was very impressed!

Off to calailly next . . .

This was a lovely read, not one of my best reads of the year, but I'd still recommend it to others.

I liked seeing things through the eyes of an 8 year old, and having things cleared up from a 29 year olds perspective.

I would have liked to have know who dunnit though!
