I admit it, I was curious as to how a story about a seagull could be equated to ideas of god and reincarnation and thought it was just a hippy-trippy 70s novel. So when I had the opportunity to finally read it I was keen to find out what the deal was.

A short but engaging and inspirational tale, Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a fable about a seagull learning about flight, but underneath it is a journey of the self-discovery and self-sacrifice that we all make. Through sheer force of will, Jonathan learns what it really means to fly and transcends his earthly self to be "a gull in a million" - which I guess is where the parallels to biblical stories of Jesus came from, particularly when Jonathan returns to Earth to teach the Flock the truth about flight.

The Wikipedia entry for this book gives a pretty good analysis of the story.

I'm really glad I finally got the chance to read this book. For anyone interested in the story who can't get hold if this copy, there appears to be an e-book version available. If you get the opportunity, take it - I read this in the time it took to run a Benji movie to videotape :)

Will send this off to pumpkin-head along with another Relay request.
