Roald Dahl is one of my favorite authors of all time. It seems like this is one of his lesser known books... although it was actually made into a movie, I've never seen it.

This book won the Whitbread Award.. here's a judge's quote from the back of the book: "Funny, wise, deliciously disgusting, a real book for children."
