I read this years ago and remember that it made quite an impression on me. Picked up this copy to re-read and then release.

Cover is different than shown.

The first sentence of this book:
"Eunice Parchman killed the Coverdale family because she could not read or write".

I enjoyed this book second time around but perhaps not quite as much as I remembered. But I still think it's a worthwhile mystery to read - psychologically suspenseful even though you know from the outset who the murderer and victims are. And it does give a grim portrayal of just how sad and desperate a situation it is to be trapped by illiteracy.

I'm going to pass this on to my husband and then release afterwards probably at a bookcrossing meet-up.
