The Don't Judge a Book-Box is a mystery bookbox. Each book is individually wrapped (newspaper, brown paper, wrapping paper, a plastic bag anthing will do) and has a label on the outside with the first few lines to tantalise us all!

The actual genre of the books doesn't matter as anything in the box when it returns home will be wild released, taken to an OBCZ, RABCKed or recycled into another bookbox if it doesn't make its way to the bottom of Mt TBR.

The Rules

No one likes rules, but there always rules. To be included please PM catrionamoore.

Please journal the box BCID (on a postcard probably) on receipt of the box, make your selections from the box and replace with registered books from your shelf. Don't forget to wrap and label them for this box!

Please make sure the box is reasonably full. I will not be pedantic and insist you replace the same number of books as you remove as this may not be logistically viable.

PM the next person on the list for their address and send the box on in a reasonable amount of time. You do not need to keep the box once you've made your selection.

Journal your books once you've unwrapped them, and please also journal under the box BCID when you have sent it on.

If the box needs replacing please do so. A box sent Standard Parcel may be up to 1.5 metres long but it's combined length and girth must not exceed 3 metres.

Ten books have been wrapped and labelled for inclusion in the box. Letting on what the books are would of course give the game away. So please don't let on what you have added when journalling this box. Although I'm sure everyone will love to know what you have removed and unwrapped.

I have used flyers and a bit of free newspaper that were in my recycling bag to wrap my books. I have also printed labels. You can wrap your books in anything and labels can be hand written. You could even use plain paper and write on the paper itself!

There is a (hopefully) eclectic mix of books in the box, feel free to add from any genre. Books left over when the box returns home will be released, RABCKed, included in other bookboxes or otherwise have their bookcrossing journey continued.

Enjoy!

Bookbox arrived - it's just like Christmas all over again! I was going to take out a couple but I ended up taking out six and replacing them with another six (from a mix of genres) - so there are still ten books in the box... I ended up taking out:

Practical Aromatherapy by Penny Rich
Gridlock by Ben Elton
Hogfather by Terry Pratchett
A Day in the Life by Oodles of Authors
The Photograph by Penelope Lively
Bad Behaviour Stories by Mary Gaitskill

I'm off to journal them...

I've pmed ChinaSourcer for their address and already got a reply so I shall send the box on as soon as I can get to the post office...

Journal Entry 5 by wubbaducky from not specified, not specified not specified on Tuesday, January 24, 2006
Well, I finally made it to the post office today. Between the drama of trying to get my car serviced and MOT-ed, work, uni, the dogs and trying to figure out how where the heck the indicator was on someone else's car, it's taken me longer to get to the post office than I would have liked - but it's now winging its way to ChinaSourcer. I hope they enjoy the bookbox as much as I did!

Journal Entry 6 by ChinaSourcer from Norwich, Norfolk United Kingdom on Thursday, January 26, 2006
The BookBox has arrived safely today, many thanks.

This is an exciting box, I look forward to having a good look through later this evening.

Journal Entry 7 by ChinaSourcer from Norwich, Norfolk United Kingdom on Thursday, February 2, 2006
I've finally choosen some books and will wrap my replacements tomorrow.

I choose:
Angel Fire by Andrew M Greeley
The Dragonbone Chair by Tad Williams
That Awkward Age by Mary Selby
Fundamentals of Psychology by C J Adcock

Many thanks.

LennyB is going to collect the box from me on Saturday morning.

Journal Entry 8 by LennyB from Norwich, Norfolk United Kingdom on Saturday, February 4, 2006
Picked up from China sourcer this morning.
Sorry to miss you Bren.
Thanks for the carrier bag.

Journal Entry 9 by LennyB from Norwich, Norfolk United Kingdom on Saturday, February 4, 2006
I have already selected my books, wrapped and replaced mine and PM'd dodau for her address.
I selected
Killling Me Softly by Nicci French
The Selected Poems of William Blake
and Men Are From Mars Women Are From Venus.
I was a little disappointed in the choice, as from their opening sentences, they all seemed to be Detective novels or Romances.
I've probably missed out on a gem.
Still the whole idea is not to judge things, so I shall read all three of my selections, and hope others will enjoy the books I've contributed.

Arrived this morning. From the condition of the tape it may have been opened en-route but was full so nothing missing hopefully. I have chosen three but haven't unwrapped them yet. I will do that once I've repacked and sealed the box so I don't cheat and change them. I've chosen my replacements so will hopefully so that later once I find some paper to wrap them in.

Journal Entry 12 by StoryChaser from Waterlooville, Hampshire United Kingdom on Thursday, February 23, 2006
How cool is this...? Today is my birthday and look what's arrived; a whole box of books all wrapped up.... So exciting and I have already chosen three books (just had to have the one wrapped in birthday paper!).

The books I have chosen are:
Frameshift by Robert J Sawyer
Having It & Eating It by Sabine Durrant
Splitting by Faye Weldon

This is such a good idea, it is so intriguing just choosing a book by the first few lines.
Right, I'm off now to find some good books to put back in the box and journal the ones I've taken out, and then PM the next lucky person. Thanks catrionamoore for starting this great box :)

Journal Entry 28 by lellie from Trimley St Mary, Suffolk United Kingdom on Friday, February 9, 2007
Oh what a lovely box!
I have been incarcerated with a back injury and had to get the postman to bring this in and put it on the kitchen table for me, then I spent a brilliant half hour musing over the first sentences.
I chose 6, which turned out to be

What Maisie Knew by Henry James
Memoirs Of A Geisha by Arthur Golden
The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Tokyo by Mo Hayder
The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood
Kiss Me by Andrew Pyper

Three of these I have actually already read (I blame the strong painkillers I am on at the moment)! Although I can be forgiven for not recognising the Henry James, as I read it at least 15 years ago as part of my OU degree.
I'm sure I can find good homes for them.
Thanks so much everyone for passing this on and catrionamoore for having such a splendid idea and really brightening up my week for me.

Journal Entry 29 by lellie from Trimley St Mary, Suffolk United Kingdom on Monday, February 19, 2007

I chose two books:

Morley Marvels by Robert Morley ---Hmm, we'll see --- and
Perfume by Patrick Sueskind, which I read already in German

I wrapped and labeled two books and am waiting now for tehutis address.

Journal Entry 31 by tehuti from Swansea, Wales United Kingdom on Wednesday, March 28, 2007

Journal Entry 32 by wyldetwo from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Thursday, April 12, 2007
This arrived at work on Tuesday and caused much interest!

I've picked 3 big ones and a couple of little ones with a little help from my friends, and they are:
A Sort of Life - Graham Greene
The Five People You Meet in Heaven - Mitch Albom
The First Circle - Alexander Solzhenitsyn
Mars Venus - John Gray
Never Forget Facts & Figures - Dominic O'Brien

Now to choose what to put back in ....

Journal Entry 33 by blum from Slough, Berkshire United Kingdom on Friday, May 4, 2007
Arrived today. What a great idea!

Journal Entry 34 by foxy737 from Westgate on Sea, Kent United Kingdom on Monday, May 28, 2007
sorry for delay journalling i've been unwell so this sat in a corner for two days.
well better now and having opened what i initially thought was a normal bookbox i got really excited seeing birthday wrapping paper on top i thought someone had sent me an early birthday rabck, unfortunately i then discovered everything was wrapped up and not all in birthday paper :(
anyway when i found out the bookbox card explaining i had the don't judge a book by it's cover bookbox everything fell into place and i started to look through the sentences written on each wrapped book.
i have taken out
"i am a citizen of the United States of America" which was "Stupid White Men" by Michael Moore
"the one eyed black cat called Majicon sat between a rusting cage and two sacks of stale grain on a shelf at the top of the shop on cutting lane" which was "the wild road" by Gabriel King

have replaced with 2 more books and will post onto Anglersrest asap.

Journal Entry 35 by AnglersRest from Teignmouth, Devon United Kingdom on Monday, June 18, 2007

Journal Entry 38 by niccijl from Bradford, West Yorkshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, September 11, 2007
Well I've had a rummage around and have taken out just two books as I already have a stack to read and my availables are a little limited at the moment. I took out...

The Distance Between Us by Maggie O'Farrell
The Wit and Wisdom of Susan Jeffries

This is now winging its way to Sterile.

Journal Entry 39 by Sterile from Burnley, Lancashire United Kingdom on Wednesday, September 12, 2007
Oh! happy days, it's arrived. Thanks Nic for sending it on and of course catriona for organising. Already mailed tabbystripes for an address and would be delighted to get it moving again by the weekend.

Journal Entry 40 by Sterile from Burnley, Lancashire United Kingdom on Friday, September 21, 2007
I am still waiting for a reply from Tabbystripes after another PM this week and this evening an e mail to the alternative address. I am a little concerned that she may only be on holiday for a fortnight and so don't want to pass on to the next member just yet. On the other hand this bookbox still has some traveling yet to do and it's been out there a long while.... Will put out a ISO next week. I will also start to try to get hold of Scarlett17 with a view of sending it there instead.

So Tabbystripes finally got back to me and said she didn't want it anyway. Scarlett17 is on holiday but still wants the box. What we have done is to ask thing-1 to send the box to Scarlett17 when they have finished with it and then Scarlett17 will send to -jaffa-.......... I will get the box on the move if it kills me!!
