This is the third, and largest installment in the trilogy of comic-thriller novels by one of Australia's most decorated writers. It follows Dog Rock and The Pale Blue Crochet Coathanger Cover in a sequence of stories involving the intrepid English migrant postman-cum-investigator D'Arcy D'Oliveres.
Foster is a man with scientific training and a deep love of the classics: The Glade within the Grove is a reworking of the Attis myth stretching over a 30 year period from the 1960s in an unusual Australian context of the fictional location of Erinungarah in Southern Highland rainforest.

A related volume, The Ballad of Erinungarah, the poem discovered in a old mailbag and the basis for D'Arcy's investigation, was published subsequently.

The Glade within the Grove won the Miles Franklin Literary Award in the year it was published.
