From Publishers Weekly
Seventeen weddings in six months—what's a girl to do? Especially when she's Joy Silverman, who's perfectly happy in her relationship with Gabe and perfectly adamant about her refusal to ever get married. First, there was the breakup of her parents' marriage and her mother's subsequent emotional meltdown; second, there's the lack of any "empirical evidence that marriage is really all useful or effective these days, that it does anything for relationships and the people in them." But most of Joy's friends and acquaintances—not to mention her recently betrothed mother, father and younger brother—do believe in marriage. Thank goodness cynical Joy's artsy hunk of a boyfriend agrees with her that marriage is as outdated as "using leeches or bloodletting." But everyone keeps asking when Joy and Gabe will tie the knot, a situation that causes Joy no small amount of turmoil. So, from April to September, Joy and Gabe dance and drink and toast; in between weddings, Joy spends plenty of time with pals at the Pantheon, her favorite New York City watering hole.

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would, with the exception of the ending. I have a low limit for chicklit, and it had been a while since I read any, so this took up my biannual allotment! :) There were a few points in this story where I giggled, others where I thought, WTF?! The main character, Joy, is alternately very realistic and I felt I could connect to her, and ridiculous and nonsensical in a way that was totally alienating. There were enough other characters who were more consistent to keep my interest. I absolutely loved the descriptions of all the different weddings--because despite the wildly varying themes, none of them was like my wedding at all (and mine is, of course, my all time favorite and I consider it quite unique). To be honest, half the fun of the book was probably all the weddings, including all the variations on orange bridesmaid dresses! When I first started listening I felt the reader was too laid back; I worried that I would fall asleep while driving if I had to listen to her for long. Once a few more characters were introduced and she started to change her voice for each, it helped a bit. I would say that chicklit fans will probably be OK with this; someone like me, who is only so-so on the chicklit, might balk. Be forewarned--the 9th/last CD has only about two minutes of recording on it; so when I was expecting another forty minutes of story, I actually just got the very abrupt ending. Hope that's not too much of a spoiler...but I did want to say how much I disliked the ending!

Just finished up listening to this one yesterday, and really enjoyed it. Good reader! I'm a little sad at how it turned out, but the story was good. Loved Henry, Joy's best friend, and her brother James. I'll be passing this one along to BC'er sdkelley the next time we get together!

Thanks again lizziwhiz!
