The Stranger
11 journalers for this copy...
I do believe this book is on it's way to the UK
Caught in the 2005 christmas ornament gift exchange - many thanks to Chubsie Wubsie - and put into TBR pile. However, as with many other books, did not get to the top before I had to do a big clear out so this book is being sent on its way. Hope the next 'owner' gets to read and enjoy!!!

Going as a surprise RABCK to a fellow BCer :o)
An unexpected surprise from caffcaff. Many thanks!
A colleague is searching out the French version so I can read them together, so it may be a while, but I promise I *will* read it ...
I gave up waiting for the French copy and read this anyway. Having no idea of the plot, it is a coincidence that I read it just before Kafka's The Trial and it made for an interesting comparison. This protaganist is at least aware of his crime and the system is somewhat less labyrinthine than Kafka's absurdist nightmare, no matter what the comments on the back of this edition imply. What struck me is that both 'heroes' are in the end resigned to, even welcoming, their fate. However this one, unlike The Trial I would re-read - and it would be interesting to see if it feels different in French or a British-English translation ...
Thank you again Angel-Child.

Arrived safely this morning have one ring ahead so will be with it within 10 days. Love the label bookmark so my bills might get paid instead of keeping my reading place :-)
Hoping this will load this is my 2nd time around..
Enjoyed this – clear concise writing which is a style I particular like. Occasionally the translation brought me up short..and I found myself needing to re-read a sentence to understand it.
Interesting insights into differing perceptions of the world and workings of the mind. Whose version/expectations are valid?
One question the last line of the book..
I’ve just read Caterina’s entry and feel I will end up putting The Trial on distant MTBR. But I think I will get around to shifting Camus’s The Plague further up current MTBR and maybe some more from booklist of Vintage International which is not a publisher I had come across before.
I have a spare copy of The Plague under Availables if anybody wants it
Thanks for ringing this book it reminded me why I enjoy reading foreign authors
I have next persons address and will get it sent on next week
On its way posted today 27 march 2008
Arrived today and looks a quick enough read so I should have it moving by next week.
Thanks celcticseahorse for sending it on, and caterinaanna for starting the ray.
A short but interesting book. The differences in the way the same, simple acts (especially those unconnected to the crime) were perceived was very interesting. I have Kafka's The Trial on my shelf and I may move it up Mount TBR for a comparison.
This will be off to Glitterlover in the next couple of days.

received safe and sound thanks.
I really disliked the main character and then spent all the time working out how and why I felt that. I was easily engrossed in the tale but wonder if I might prefer a different translation. Maybe that level of discomfort was sought by Camus.
This arrived here yesterday, thank you for sending it on to me. The note on the envelope made me and my mum smile as we're both forever losing things at the bottom of piles. :o) Life is not good at the moment so I'm not feeling able to concentrate on reading but I will try and get to this soon.
I'm so sorry that I've hung on to this book for such a long time. I know that I'm not in the right frame of mind to be reading much at the moment having recently lost my Mum so I'm going to get this sent on to chiboiler. I'm going to the Post Office this afternoon so will post it then. Thanks for being so patient with me.
Just received this book in the mail. I will read it shortly - I am currently getting ready to head to the beach for a week and am not exactly sure this is beach reading!
Thanks for passing this book on, sunflowergirl! And thanks for starting the ray - CaterinaAnna.
Very quick read! I finished this book off in two days - only reading during my commute!
This book did not get me as riled up as the Trial did. But, similar to The Trial, I thought it was an interesting take on people who live their lives so passively that they just take what ever comes their way. Although, the main character was sooo lacking in emotions or opinions on anything that it was a bit creepy.
I plan on answering CaterinaAnna's wishes and donating this book to the 1001 Library, however, I am going to pass it around to a few local readers that are not members prior to doing so. I will keep it moving!

I finished the book over the weekend. It was a very quick read. I liked it but also thought his lack of emotion was a little creepy. Nothing seemed to reach him. I didn't know what to expect and ended up enjoying the story.
I will give this back to ChiBoiler the next time I see her.
