Loved, loved, loved this book. Loved it.
The storyline is so unique, following a family of major conflict and problems. From mysterious deaths to unknown pregnancies to crossdressing. Wow. What a novel.
MacDonald really knows how to tell a great story and let it unfold right before your eyes. When you think you've got the story figured out, you don't. The author touches on so many different controversial aspects of life as well.
I cannot say enough good things about this book.

I enjoyed this book about a family of sisters growing up on Cape Breton Island in and early 1900's. They have a terrible relationship with their father and the girls and their relationships are warped. The fiction is somewhat convoluted and there are some areas of the story that seem underdeveloped. I will look for something else by this author.
received this book from a nervousness.org round robin. I'll read it and pass it on.

I enjoyed this book even though I found it a little soap opraish. Sending it to a fellow nervous person and bookcrosser.

Just got this as part of a nervousness ring and I've breezed through the first 100 pages. This is so far an engaging story that has sucked me in quickly!
This is no ordinary book....it's an epic and one of my new all time favorites. I love tales of disfunstion and it don't get any better than the Pipers. It's romantic, scandolous and suspenseful. I particularily enjoy the way the book is divided into different views, poems, letters and such to move the tale along. It is a masterpiece.
