Felix "Lix" Dern, a celebrated actor, is so potent that every "woman he dares sleep with bears his child." Now, having set in motion the life of his sixth child, the first with his second wife, Lix is in a less-than-celebratory mood. Set in the fictitious "City of Kisses," a municipality experiencing the burgeoning of a new openness following a lengthy period of restricted civil liberties, Genesis chronicles each of Lix's matings, from the girl he spied with his binoculars from his fourth-floor room near the wharf; to Freda, the flamboyant, swan-necked revolutionary, with whom Lix had planned to kidnap the American chairman of a multinational electronics giant; and on to his less-ostentatious first wife, Alicja Lesniak; fellow actor An; and now Mouetta, Freda's cousin. Like its namesake in the Old Testament, Genesis is a creation myth of sorts, complete with a flood and a less-confusing list of begats. Crace, whose previous novels include Quarantine (1998) and Being Dead (2000), continues to be an eclectic writer of original and compelling stories. Benjamin Segedin
