No wonder this book has received actual medals: it's very well written, holds some amazing surprises and makes you think about human nature and society - and, like good utopian literature, all wrapped in a capturing story. Highly recommended for teenagers and adults alike.

From the back cover:

Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear of pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community.

When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now it's time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.

Pocket, 179 p.

Releasing this book in memory of Hunter who passed away at age 13 on July 21, 2003, after an 8 year, and 5 bouts of Wilms Cancer. This was one of Hunters favorite books.

I had no idea, when I started reading this slender 'young adult' book, of the impact it would have on me. What an extraordinary piece of writing - and what an enthralling picture of a future dystopia - Lowry has created!

I don't want to discuss the plot too much here, for fear of spoiling it for future readers. The themes covered in the novel are thought-provoking, and certainly left me both engaged and moved by the dilemma facing young Jonas as he discovers the truth about the society he lives in.

This book has been tagged 'young adult' but is just as effective in reaching an adult audience, as is all good literature, I believe.

Thank you so much for sharing this lovely book with me Marieka. I haven't decided what to do with this copy yet. I would like to pass it on to someone who will similarly appreciate this wonderful piece of writing.

Eeep! This came in just as I was going away on a weekend trip, and I completelly forgot to journal it when I came back! Bad me! Sooo very sorry!

Lmn60, thank you so much for this RABCK. I've read many rave reviews of this book, and the plot sounds really intriguing. I'll start reading as soon as I have some free time - can't wait!

This was wonderful and sad and thought-provoking and beautiful. I cried while reading it on the train, again... (The ticket collector saw me and it was the same person as the last time I did that, so now I'm probably officially labeled as crazy.)

Thanks again for this, lmn60. I'll try to find another reader who'd appreciate this book!

I think this is a special book. A dystopian world in which everyone's destiny is decided for them and the fate of a special young man as the scales fall from his eyes. I will definitely give this novel to my daughter to read but as she is currently 4 I will release this copy and hope that someone else will find it as intriguing as me.

Thank you to Vexter for finding me. I plan to release this book at the unconvention in Brighton this weekend, where I am convinced it will find a bookcrossing home. x
