It has been said often enough that baby boomers are a television generation, but High Fidelity reminds that in a way they are the record-album generation as well. This hilarious novel is obsessed with music; Hornby's narrator is an early thirtysomething bloke who runs a London record store. He sells albums recorded the old-fashioned way--on vinyl--and is having a tough time making other transitions as well, specifically to adulthood. The book is in one sense a love story, both sweet and interesting; most entertaining, though, are the hilarious arguments over arcane matters of pop music

I'm taking this out of the two-tier fiction bookbox.
I've heard lots about Nick Hornby but never read anything he has written. I wasn't expecting to like his writing particularly but I read the first few pages of this book and would like to read on.

For me this book came with a major point against it. I am probably the only person in the world who doesn’t like music (any music) so most of the references passed straight over my head. Despite that it held my interest. When I began reading I thought this was going to be just chick-lit for men but it was too well written to be classified so simplistically. Nothing much happened (woman leaves bloke, they get back together again) but I liked it. The characters were likeable, the story was written with humour and insight. How nice to read a relationship novel from a man’s point of view. This was something I would never have picked up to read if it hadn’t come in a bookbox but I’m glad I took it out.
I will definitely read more books by this author.
