A really in-depth look at Elizabeth I's life before she became Queen. Really detailed and explains how it affected her as Queen later on. Really enjoyable for history buffs!

Just sent it off to juniper hill. will edit entry as soon as I decide what to say in review. : )
...
I really enjoyed reading Elizabeth. Starkey said that he hoped it would read more like a novel than a history book, and in some ways it does. So much well researched information was delivered in such an engaging style that I feel like an expert on young Elizabeth without having done much work. His efforts to sound less like a historian can be pretty funny, especially to someone new to British slang, and when immediatly followed by obscure terms not in my dictionary lol! At least there weren't too many of those. I highly recommend it to any one interested, although non-Brits might have trouble with some of the slang.

Thanks again chocolatemummy for sending it!

Sorry, this arrived a few days ago but I was really busy and didn't have time to journal. Somehow I'm working my way through three books at the moment (how did that happen?) but I'll get round to it as quick as I can. Thanks for sharing!

Journal Entry 9 by DJgib from Cambridge, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom on Saturday, October 21, 2006
I found this book very interesting; I've always found Elizabeth an interesting figure, and very complicated in the sense that I never knew whether to admire her or scorn her. I must say this book hasn't helped much in that question, it's very honestly written and highlights both her good and bad sides. It certainly does show her to have been an intelligent and resourceful woman with a survival instinct to rival anybody's, for which at least I think she must be admired.

I'm not sure the book really did what a quote on the cover suggests, 'sets before us not only the woman behind the throne but the girl behind the woman'. I got an impression of Elizabeth the public figure and the ruler, but not really the person. I still have no idea of what she was like 'privately', and I did feel the book glossed over (though it did describe) one of her most powerful characteristics, her sexuality. Of course, the events happened some centuries ago and resources are limited; I'm no historian so I don't know how fair of me it was to have those expectations.

Thanks chocolatemummy for sharing this book, I really enjoyed reading it. I've pm'd drusillamac for an address, so I hope to have it moving again soon.
