Nick Hornby wrote this book about 31 songs (and a couple of albums) to illustrate the various ways in which music accompanies his life. You also learn some background information on his novel High Fidelity (not only when he is explicitly referring to it).

I don't know whether it is because of the age difference between the author and me that I didn't know most of the songs, or whether this is more a sign of the deeply personal nature of the selection of songs that we know. Either way, I suppose any reader will recognize many aspects of music that Hornby describes, even if the reader is not familiar with the songs that the author uses to illustrate them.
