Synopsis:
The Kopcheks are refugess from a European country, where their father has been killed fighting for what he believed in. With the royalties his books have earned in this country the family are able to buy a dilapidated house in the East Coast town of Chadhaven.
After their ordeals Sondra (the fifteen-year-old girl who tells the story) expects a hero's welcome. But Chadhaven doesn't give them that. To their neighbours they are the "crummy refuees", who have prevented the house from become a centre for the sailing club. And when Sondra and her brother win free scholarships to the Grammar School they make more enemies.
But Mrs. Kopchek is not daunted by their troubles. Setting to work to make the house their "castle", earning money by caretaking at the town hall, she gradually shows even the hotheaded Sondra how to accept and to be accepted.
