«This book was originally called 'Sixteen Again'. Then it was called 'The Boy I Loved Before' and now, for reasons I suspect not entirely unconnected to the success of 'Can You Keep A Secret?' by my good friend Sophie Kinsella, it's become 'Do You Remember the First Time?'. Anyway, the plot is dead simple. A 32year old wishes she was 16 again, and wakes up in her 16 year old body. Kind of like 'Big', only 'Small'. I think everyone thinks if they had to go back to their teenage years knowing what they know now they'd be a lot cooler and not make such a hash of it. I doubt this is true.
Anyway, I'm really fond of this book. My one regret is I used Darius as the teenage sex symbol. One, he wouldn't then give me and my friend a backstage pass and, two, he'll probably be completely finished by the time it comes out. And we didn't even want a stupid backstage pass. It was only for research. I would have stuck to Justin Timberlake, but I'd already called the teenage hero Justin before the funny looking guy with the curly hair in the boyband transmogrified into the most fancied man on earth. Plus I had a joke about Persian kings and doctors that I really liked and Darius is sadly the only Iranian pop star we have AND the only entertainer cheesy enough to still get girls up on stage when he plays live. But it was definitely an error. Stupid backstage pass.
I think it'll be like Andrew McCarthy- about 50% of the people who interviewed me about that book thought he was a fictional character. Aah, fleeting fame.»
