Vinge is no Greg Egan, but his prowess as an SF writer is only increasing. This 1992 book marks the first time I really started taking notice of Vinge. His portrait of different kinds of intelligence -- human, transhuman, posthuman, distributed -- gives plenty of food for thought, and his interstellar Usenet is hilarious, especially the clueless newbie from the backwater of the galaxy who nevertheless knows that "Hexapodia are the key insight" when no one else does...
