There are a few bad memories attached to this particular copy of this book, so I almost released it unread just to get rid of it, but it's also a novel I'd wanted to read and I didn't really feel like buying another copy, so in the end common sense won and it landed on Mt TBR on its way out the door.
I'd heard a lot of hype about White Teeth, and unfortunately it didn't quite live up to the hype - it's an ok story, and explores some interesting ideas (race, class, culture, family, religion, exploitation, and who and what we place our faith in), but it all felt a bit purposeless to me - maybe it's because the focus changes so often between the different generations, so that there's not one story, but many (and perhaps that's the whole point of it). By the final few chapters I was feeling like it had lost its way and dragged on just a bit too long. But there's some nice moments, and it does give you a lot to think about.
