A very belated Not So Secret Summer Solstice book - the first one I sent had been crossed off the wishlist, but that hadn't shown up on my print-out, so I'm hoping for better luck this time! (I haven't been asked for a replacement, but it does only seem fair.)

Hope you enjoy it - sounds intriguing from the blurb!

Now, how lovely are you?! There was absolutely no need for you to go to all this trouble and expense! But, as you did... THANK YOU! I have wanted to read this book since I saw the previews, I LOVE Kate Atkinson, especially 'Behind the Scenes...' and started this one as soon as it arrived. A wonderful book, very possibly as good, if not better, than 'BtS...'. Really wonderfully written and such well created characters that drag you in and dont let go. Some expected twists and turns, but then some very unexpected ones too. I loved it!
Thanks so much for thinking of me and sending this. You made me a very happy bunny :)

Have just noticed that this is on a lot of wishlists so am going to send it off to a friend.

Thanks for putting this on a ring Winterson. This was on my wish list. I loved Behind the Scenes at the Museum. I recently read Emotionally Weird though and wasn't impressed so I'm interested to see what I make of this one.

Journal Entry 4 by WormyOne from Brighton & Hove, East Sussex United Kingdom on Wednesday, October 19, 2005
This is great. OK, so it requires a certain suspension of disbelief but its light-hearted, engaging style helps with that. Getting through the first three chapters is grim and the book is full of sad stories (of lost girls - raped, murdered and/or disappeared) yet overall the book is uplifting. Don't treat it as a whodunnit - it's not set up so you can work much out long before it's made obvious - just roll with it. This is Kate Atkinson at her best - creating a cast of loveable eccentrics and a storyline full of switchbacks.

This arrived in the post this morning, it's now 4th on my urgent TBR pile. I think someone did warn me once that bookrings were like buses .........

Journal Entry 6 by wyldetwo from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Monday, November 14, 2005
I found this book totally engrossing. It was a nice light romping read after the book I last read (Les Liaisons Dangereuses), in spite of the dark nature of some of the subject matter - rape, murder etc etc!

You can see a few twists of the plot coming, but that does not detract, and some strands of the plot are left hanging slightly for you to draw your own conclusions anyway .....

Will be sending on to Chelseagirl very soon, I have her address already because of organising the NSSFC draw!

Journal Entry 7 by chelseagirl from Faringdon, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Saturday, November 19, 2005
Very sneaky ..... I'd entirely forgotten about signing up for this book! Arrived safely this morning. I'm getting horribly behind on my ring books right know because I seem to be reading a page and a half in bed and then falling asleep - means it takes forever to get through them. But I'll get to this as soon as possible. thank you :)

Journal Entry 8 by chelseagirl from Faringdon, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Sunday, January 8, 2006
Well I eventually got round to reading this over Christmas, but it was well worth the wait! As someone else said, the first three chapters are a bit grim and it's hard to see how it's all going to fit together for a long time, but there are some twists that will take your breath away, the three intertwining stories are well written and fast paced and the characters are all strong and reasonably believable. My only complaint is that the ending left me wanting more!

Thanks for letting me read this. I'll definitely be looking out for more by Kate Atkinson.

I'll pass this on to anglersrest as soon as I can find her address!

Journal Entry 9 by AnglersRest from Teignmouth, Devon United Kingdom on Friday, January 20, 2006
Arrrived yesterday. Adding to mount ring - this is the third here, so will try and get to asap.

Journal Entry 10 by AnglersRest from Teignmouth, Devon United Kingdom on Monday, January 30, 2006
Started this yesterday and finished this afternoon. It took me a while to get into this one; and I almost gave up, but something compelled me to keep reading and I am glad I did. As others have mentioned there were some grim chapters, but there were unexpected twists to the story and I am glad I persevered.

Both LindyB28 & Coolboxuk have asked to be skipped, so I have emailed Beebarf for an address.

I've been a bit off reading lately, confining myself to a few pages before going to sleep each night. But this is the first one in a while I've really had the appetite to lose myself in while curled up on the sofa for long stretches of time.

And a very enjoyable book it is too. The case histories of the title don't mesh neatly in the way you might expect from a crime mystery, but this is no more than superficially a crime mystery and it deals with subtle strands of loss and alienation which echo and intertwine and resonate with the protagonist's own tormented life.

My only gripe is that it employs a cheap cheat which a real crime writer couldn't get away with - deliberately misleading the reader by withholding important information without which the reader can't either make a stab at working it out or look back and see how they were duped.
