Deborah is a woman with personal transportation problems which she and her strange friend Geoffrey intend to solve. If they manage it, the knock-on effect could just save the cities of the world from driving themselves to their own funerals in man's greatest invention. But there are of course those who would be sorry to see that happen, those who are delighted with the traffic jams because they mean more new roads, those who want to see ever more cars sold because they will drink ever more oil, those who applaud only one type of public transport - the gravy train.

And so the battle is on: an hilarious, exciting and staggeringly unequal battle in which a traffic warden can be a hero and a wheelchair can turn into a tank.

There was something I din't quite like about this book. The jokes were too obvious and they also felt a bit forced and even unnecessary. I'm glad that Elton has adopted a less humorous style. His newer books are a lot more enjoyable and even more fun to read. And what was that bit about the Brainians about?

What happened to Geoffrey was a complete surprise and I had to take a small break from reading just to readjust my thinking. There were many parts that just felt impossible, but I decided that this was not our world but a very similar one and these people were experiencing an adventure. It kind of made up for the unbelievable bits.

Most of the book read like an essay on traffic and as such it would have been a lot more interesting. Somehow the characters were unnecessary for the point.

Well, all in all, a very uneven book.

I got this from our BC-meeting. I haven't read anything from this writer before so let's see how I like this. :)

Weird book, indeed. I kind of liked it at times but then at other times I was just disgusted and thinking that is this really supposed to be entertaining reading. And if this was supposed to be a humorous book, why didn't I grin even once?? Well, chirel pretty much nailed it down, so I don't have anything more to add.
