I found this book quite a difficult read, as the author's childhood is so far removed from the upbringing that I would hope to offer to my own children. That said, there is an uplifting sense of the author's strength of character and ability to cope.

Released at BC meeting.
I picked this up from the BC meet up in the Cart and Horses on Wednesday. I heard about it when it won the Pullitzer Prize in 1997 and I've had it on my mental To Be Read list ever since.

Thanks so much for this donation to my new OBCZ - I just need to gather a few more books then I will be visiting Bell Plantation in Towcester to see if they remember offering me bookshelf space in the garden centre!
Journal Entry 5 by weebly at Bell Plantation Garden Centre - A5/A43 in Towcester, Northamptonshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, November 8, 2005
Dropped in to the new OBCZ at the garden centre just north of Towcester. Donated a couple of books and picked this up as it's one of those books I have been meaning to get for a while. Thanks for releasing it!
Great book, though I do wonder how he could really recall thngs so well from when he was 4! Amazing to think that people lived like this in Western Europe in living memory. Checking round my friends to see if anyone else wants to read it before I leave it at the Rugby OBCZ.
Handed it to a friend on 11 March.
