Hidden in the heart of the old city of Barcelona is the 'cemetary of Forgotten Books', a labyrinthine library of obscure and forgotten titles. To this library, a man brings his 10-year-old son, Daniel, one cold morning in 1945. Daniel is allowed to choose one book and from te dusty shelves pulles The Shadow of The Wind by Julian Carax. But as Daniel grows up, several people seem inordinately interested in his find. What begins as a case of literary curiosty turns into a race to find out the truth behind the life and death of Julian Carax and to save those he left behind.

An enjoyable read.

Wow, that was fast! This looks like a good book to take with me to Mexico in February, but knowing me I'll probably read it sooner ;)

Thanks camis!

Overall I thought it was a great book! Very atmospheric, with rich and complex story and character development. I found the beginning and end very absorbing, with a great feeling of suspense and hidden secrets lurking around every corner, but the middle dragged on a bit longer than it had to. Also, it seemed overwritten to me, though maybe that has to do with the translation.

There were some great comic/ironic moments, such as: "Telling the truth should be our last resort, Daniel, even more so when you're dealing with a nun." Actually, pretty much everything Fermin says or does is funny. Great character!

And finally, I am wondering if anyone else finds it too obvious what the true identity of the man calling himself Coubert is by page 100 or so?

Anyway, I really enjoyed this read and I look forward to passing it on to someone else!

YBS offer. Mailed April 11.

Thanks for sharing this -- Everyone is talking it up and I was hoping to be able to read it soon. Before it goes "Da Vinci Code" as in... rumors flying "Oh... I heard his mothers brothers uncle wrote the premis of that book and he ran with it... it's now in litigation.. LOL" Thanks =) ~bbl
