This was my first Philip Roth, but I'm sure it won't be my last. An excellent read, captivating and involving. Delving into the sick, secret heart of what should be the perfect American family, it's quite a ride, in which everything we think should be true about these characters is turned upside down. The slow but unstoppable movement from youthful hope, through compromise with one's dreams, to adult dissatisfaction is traced with subtle confidence. You could call it part family saga, part social documentary, but always entertaining, if you like your writing grown-up and thoughtful. The theme of racism, economic exploitation and home-grown terrorists is even more relevant today than when this was written, and the horror, fear and disbelief of the family of someone who would grow up to detonate a bomb that would kill hoer "own people" is beautifully - and painfully - depicted. "American Pastoral" is touching and troubling, I'd say, but thoroughly enjoyable.
