I read this soon after it was published and thought that the promoton of the book appealed to our base instincts -- let's see just how mean and nasty the ultra rich are so that we can feel superior; let's see how they really spend their time and money. I'm sure the method boosted sales, but i found the novel to be not the light read that was pitched. The characters were well-drawn, the nanny grew from her relationship with her charge (and she didn't like the lessons the young boy was learning or the fate that awaited him). Okay, too melodramatic, but I read it a long time ago, and even then I thought that it got short-shrift from the media as nothing more than a peek into the lives of the ultra rich.
