Angela's Ashes: A Memoir of a Childhood
2 journalers for this copy...
Looking forward to re-reading and bookcrossing this one some time in the future, but for now all I can do is add it to Mt TBR and get back to my 'serious university reading'.
A wonderful book. Funny in places. Most depressing in others. And throughout Frank McCourt writes in such evocative prose that I can read over and over, that stays with me between readings and that makes me feel as if I'm walking alongside him down those Limerick lanes.
And the family are characterised so well. Frank's father may be from the north, and have an 'odd manner', but there are moments where you can see why Angela and the boys still love him. Frank's brothers too all have their own individual personalities - Malachy the entertainer, Michael who brings home the strays, Eugene who pines for his twin. I was hooked form the very first page.
This is one novel that, in my opinion, deserves all the 'hype' it gets.
Update: Offered on the International Notable Books relay on the 19th of August, 2005.
