I read this book while I was traveling in England, and I absolutely loved it. After reading I crossed it to a Dutch lady, who was married to and Englishman and living in London. But here is my second chance, to get another copy for keeps. From the Deventer Boekenmarkt.

Now isn't that something - coming home with my prized treasure, I discovered i already had a personal copy , from the secondhand bookstore. It must be a bout of early dementia. Meaning that this copy is available.

after reading two other Brysons, I thought I would like this one too. the more because I like to read literature of Britain. but it was a disappointment. to much talking about hotels and restaurants, not enough about walking in the country. I got bored by that and irritated about his way of travelling, seeming to throw too much money around in those hotels and restaurants. I have to read the last few chapters and still hope for a bit more nature...
After that I'll give it to Wigant, who likes Bryson too and is going for a holiday in Scotland next month. hope he will release it there! - which he didn't want, his backpack already full with other books. so this one is available

Vandaag aangekomen in België. Hartelijk bedankt voor het niet vergegeten van een belofte, Aaltsje! Zal t.z.t. weer doorreizen. Gaat nu nog even op de berg nog te lezen boeken.

I'm a huge fan of Bill Bryson. I had heard both positive and negative things about this book though. Many people seem to think that it is certainly not his best. That may well be the case, but I for one loved it. Very funny! I have laughed out loud sometimes.

I don't release in the wild very often, so it may take a while before I find a new home for it, but I will see to it that it continuous its travels somehow.

What a lovely book. I've never read something of Bryson before and what a briljant view he has on the world and people. Basically it is a book about his tour through UK. Funny thing is that just a month ago we visited UK and most of the same places he has been to. Wales, lake district, cornwal etc. Even some of the buildings he described I recognised. His way of talking about the Brittans is cynical yes, but relativating and I love that. His view on the English is accurate and sharp. Also his descriptions of the diffent thinking of men and women is very recognisable. And his clumsy ways of managing cars and other technical things are full of self-mockery which I love. All of it gave me good laughs, sometimes to tears. I must say that I skipped some descriptions of villages. Sometimes that was a bit of the same again. But the humour is realy briljant. And not because I'm Dutch and have malicious delight about the English. No, I had some English themselves read a few chapters, and they laughed and loved it too.
I would say this book is a must for everybody who has travelled the UK and loves its people! I gave the book to a Dutch friend who did and does the above. Would be nice to read what she will think of it.
