So this is what Russian magic realism is like...I am sure this is a very good book - it is in the "Top 52 Books" in the Penguin Classics and "1001 Books You Should Read" lists. There were funny, ironic bits but the whole time I felt like I was witness to an inside joke I wasn't ever going to understand. It would help if there were references to give insight into the allusions to Stalinist Russia in the 1930's. I'm glad I read it, and would actually like to take a course in it someday.
