Swiped this from my mom. She had two giant bags going to "Third Place Books" that she intended to trade-in for store credit. But, this looked like something I'd like to read first. Historical fiction is always a fave with me, and I've never read a book about a leprosy colony in Hawaii before.

This was a lovely and tender read. I'd known only the barebones facts of the forced leper colony at Moloka'i. Rachel was a powerful and appealing narrator. She faced many many hardships and seemingly more than her fair share of heartache, too.

This is off to replace a stalled bookring. Enjoy!!

Thanks so much mitziyah!! This book will be used to revive my lost ray!

Thanks again mitziyah!! :)

My bookray rules are very simple.

1-Journal it when you receive it

2-Have it read within a month if possible, if this isn't possible, Im not going to come and hunt you down, just give me the courtesy of a PM and let me know, so I don't go looking for another copy. Quite a few people are waiting for this book, please keep that in mind.

3-Journal/control release when you mail it off.

Journal Entry 5 by KarenZero from Maplewood, New Jersey USA on Sunday, September 17, 2006
I really enjoyed this book; it makes me want to read more about the people of Hawaii and of Moloka'i, as I didn't know about Moloka'i at all until I read this book. It also seems like this book would make a good epic movie...has anyone heard anything about a movie?
I'm glad to finally read this book as it's been so long astray! I have PMed buffra and haven't received a response yet so I will try again shortly.

I first became interested in reading Moloka'i after I read Brennert's other novel, Time and Chance, which I also liked a lot. The two books have nothing in common but the author - I love it when an author can do that!

I've always enjoyed historical fiction that spans a person's life, which is why I really enjoyed this novel. Rachel's life was filled with both heartache and joy. The setting and storyline were very unique. To be honest, I had a hard time believing this book was written by a man - I felt it had a woman's voice! The pace was slow and easy, which I was very much in the mood for.

Thank you for going through the trouble of restarting this stalled ring, momx3lovesbooks and mitziyah...and thanks for getting it to me so quickly, pammykn. I'm so glad I finally got to read this touching story. I already have onefinetabby's address. We're expecting a snowstorm here in NY over the next couple days, so I will have to wait until Monday to get this in the mail. I'll make another journal entry once it's on its way ~
