I was intrested in this book when I read how this maid has to deal with so much in the main year 1666 of the plague. There is quarantine in the village, witch-hunting, and it says she has to deal with death of family, lure of love, and disintergration from her community.

I read the book it was a bit hard at first for me to get into but then after a bit I was able to follow it. Today 8/26/05 I released it to a coworker of mine who wanted to read the book. She is the one who got me to read "Girl with a pearl earing" which I am greatful for.

Released 18 yrs ago (8/26/2005 UTC) at Gave To Coworker in -- Mail or by hand-rings, RABCK, meetings, Ohio USA

Received this very interesting looking book in the mail today. Thank you so much for sharing this, wolfprincess. When I'm finished I'll check to see if any other BCers have it on their wish lists. It will probably be a few weeks before I get started on it. Thanks again!

A very interesting read dealing with the plague's effects on an small English mining village in 1665. The main character, Anna, really discovers what she's made of, undergoing quite a personal transformation during her village's quarantine. She is definitely an admirable character. The ending locale was a bit of a surprise to me, making things seem a tad less believable. But, all in all, I did enjoy the book quite a bit. Thanks again, wolfprincess. I'll be sending the book off on Monday to another BCer who has it on her wish list. Happy Reading!

Arrived today. I shall read it and journal it again when I am finished. If it is as good as its reputation, I will make this my next suggestion for our neighborhood bookclub.

Thanks for the RABCK pashmack!

I really enjoyed this book. I've read a fair bit of historical fiction over the last year but this was my favorite. I actually went to the computer and started looking up other facts and details about the plague to augment what I had learned in the book. I will be hanging on to this copy for awhile in the hopes that my bookclub will read it eventually.

Thanks again for the RABCK pashmack.

Not only did my bookclub read it but I've loaned it to a neighbor as well. Bookclub thought it was pretty good book but to a person did not like the ending. Some felt that the author was reaching for too much with an exotic ending, others felt the author had run out of steam and needed to wrap things up. With my neighbor now and I may get it back I may not - maybe it has already started its next journey.
