last friday i've started this for the fourth time. normally i wouldn't do that - there's so much else to read. but for niels, who really likes to hear what i think of it, i persevered. and i think i'm finally in the right state of mind to appreciate this.
the story is really engrossing. but alas, the reader needs to be trained in order to understand the storyline properly. this education and the upkeep of suspense do not mix well. not even with a writer as skilled in writing for effect as crichton. the hopscotch keeps me hopping on one leg. that's uncomfortable, not exciting.
i'm half way now, let's see how crichton solves this james bond moment...

fortunately it becomes all quite exciting once well beyond the middle. there are however several bits and pieces that were apparently meant as a surprise, that i had either figured out or expected from the start. it's a bummer to spoil your own reading!
prey's concept is well done. nice to ruminate. picked the book up several times afterwards to reread sequences, which i don't often do.
