Journal Entry 4 by dolphin-au from Lake Macquarie, New South Wales Australia on Sunday, October 16, 2005
Probably not as good as some of the later books by Atwood, but I still enjoyed it! I thought the ideas about the position of men and women in society ascribed to the different characters were very old fashioned, especially seeing these were supposedly Uni-educated people, but I guess the sixties were not that modern yet. It looks like there has been huge progress in that regard in the last 40 years. It must have been a liberating experience reading Atwood's perspective in the 60s, and I can see why this book has been so much appreciated over the years, even though its relevance now is probably a bit reduced.
I like the humor used in Atwood's books. This book was quite funny as well.
Thanks peggysmum for sharing this with me.

Received in the post yesterday. Many, many thanks, dolphin-au.
I never journalled this book! Or if I did, my journal entry was lost. My list of Books Read puts it as the first book I finished in February of this year. Where is it now? I thought I had passed it on some time ago...
Quick review: Has the same unworldly feeling of some of Atwood's science fiction, despite being very firmly grounded in a real milieu. Whether that's because it's a first novel or because being an 'office girl' and fiancée in 1950s Toronto is more of an alien experience than expected. Hey, I work in an office!
I loved Marian's flashy nervous breakdown, and the visceral way she removes her predicament from herself. Creative destruction! A very original solution to a rather unoriginal problem.
I thought I had passed this book on, but I'm not sure now; I'll have to look over the shelves for it. Is BC playing up and hiding recent journal entries?
