On the back cover: Awe and exhilaration--along with heartbreak and mordant wit--abound in Lolita, Vladimir Nabokovs most famous and controversial novel, which tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert's obessive, devouring, and doomed passion for the nymphet Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America. Most of all, it is a meditation on love--love as outrage and hallucination, madness and transformation.
My Notes: Lolita is an amazing story. My experience with this book was one of few times where I watch the movie before reading the book. The movie, I loved. It's one of my favorites. The book, I also loved. There is so much more beauty in the book--Nabokov's way with words is beautiful and sharp. Humbert Humbert and Lolita are both extraordinary characters who make you think, wonder, cringe and sympathize.
