~ On two audiocassettes ~
"Bennett is an English expatriate living in France with champagne taste and a beer bankroll. Happy-go-lucky, a bit roguish, and almost out of cash, he places an ad in the 'International Herald Tribune' volunteering his services: anything considered except marriage.
"He pursues a response from the very, very wealthy Julian Poe, who has developed a simple but slightly illegal scheme to help keep the French tax man away from his door. He has also (although Bennett doesn't know it yet) developed a means of producing truffles, and intends to corner the immensely lucrative truffle market.
"Bennett signs on to help Poe with his taxes and soon finds himself in Monaco, living in a style to which he has always wished to become accustomed. But his bubble soon bursts under the weight of Poe's nefarious truffles, and Bennett finds himself involved with Sicilian and Corsican Mafiosi, crooked gendarmes, an order of monks dedicated to the god Bacchus - and the beautiful, sexy Anna Hersh, who's supposed to help Bennett, but who has her own agenda for this 'affaire' that may be hazardous to the health of both of them."

I had a great time listening to this audiobook. It was light and comical; just the perfect thing for me these days. A real treat is the simple classical music between what I believe are the book's chapters.
Another bookcrosser in Book Talk recommended Tim Curry as an excellent reader of audiobooks and I agree wholeheartedly with this particular audio. So much so that I also purchased another audiobook that is read by him: A Dangerous Fortune by Ken Follett. http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/3026514 I'm confident that he is equally as good reading that one.
This audiobook will be heading out in BigJohnLefty's audiobook box!
Taken out of bigjohnlefty's audiobox. I ADORE Tim Curry and this book sounds like fun, so I'm really looking forward to listening to this. Thanks!
I finished listening to this yesterday. It was a great novel!
As Bennett settles into his life of luxury, he realizes he's in the middle of something a lot darker and deeper than he had counted on. Then when his own mistake puts him and his employer in jeopardy, it's up to him- and his new partner- to bail them out. It all revolves around a briefcase containing the secret to truffle-growing, of all things!
At first, I had a hard time really liking the characters- they're all a bit beyond anything I can really relate to. However, they're very entertaining & interesting and I did care what happened to them by the end. I particularly enjoyed the abbot LOL This is certainly an enjoyable story with lots of complications and plenty of twists and turns- but humor as well.
I loved Tim Curry's reading (as I knew I would) though his female voices aren't the best, naturally. I totally agree with you, echesketch, about the presentation, including the reading and the music between chapters.
This was great! Thanks so much!

Adding this to my bookbox ray: Earreading Audiobooks on Cassette Bookbox #1
I hope whoever finds it, enjoys it!

I picked this out of Earreading Audiobooks on Cassette Bookbox. It looked like a fun one and having the plus of Tim Curry read it ought to be good. I will start listening to this very soon.
What a fun audio to listen to. The story takes the happy-go-lucky main character, Bennett, from France to Monaco and then gets him unwittingly caught up in a dangerous game that could decide who controls the truffle market. "Truffles??", you ask?
Somebody has developed a serum that, for the first time in agricultural history, can allow one to produce the highly prized fungi at will. Such a technology is most valuable when one considers that truffles bring in about $300 per pound.
Who will control this lucrative truffle market. Will it be the wealthy, yet dangerous, Julian Poe, who initially hires Bennett to help in a slightly illegal tax evasion scheme. Perhaps it will be a Sicilian Mafiosa boss by the name of Tutsi. Or... maybe it will be the lovely Miss Anna Hersh who was hire by Poe to assist Bennett. And what does an order of monks have to do with this caper? You must listen to find out.
Tim Curry (of Rocky Horror Picture Show fame) does a great job reading this light-hearted and comical mystery. It found the whole audiobook delightful!

I pulled this audio casette book out of the travelling book box to give it a read. Thanks imawinn2 for sending it on -- I love Tim Curry also.
I just finished listening to this audiobook on my way to work this morning. I agree with all of the journal entries previously made -- I was initially drawn to the fact that Tim Curry was doing the reading, and I know how awesome and talented he is. But the story itself, while not my usual fare, was so fun and improbable, I really enjoyed it. The ending left me with a silly grin on my face. And now I've added to my list of life goals to find out what truffles taste like, because I really don't think I've ever had one. Thanks all, for sharing this book and passing it along!
