Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors
2 journalers for this copy...
I can't get enough of well-written books that describe human beings taken to the edge of all that they know, who discover the awesome power of the Will to Live.
I had been waiting for the right time to read this book, and that time came when MaryZee invited us to join a book ray for "Miracle in the Andes," a memoir written 30 years later by one of the survivors (and a true hero) in this tragic and triumphant story. I was glad to be able to read the two books in quick succession, and would definitely recommend this approach to others.
"Alive" is a straightforward and respectful account of the 1972 plane crash in the Andes in which the survivors, most of whom were Uruguayan rugby players, avoided starvation in their 72-day ordeal only by consuming the bodies of those who had perished. Contrary to the sensational news accounts that some of us remember, Piers Paul Read approaches his subject with candor and empathy, and creates an opportunity for the reader to know something of the inner lives of the survivors, their families, and their community. An excellent book.

Oh, dear. I think I sent this book to jamesmum about a week ago...completely forgot about journaling. I hope it will arrive okay!
Glad to see I'm not the only one who sometimes forgets to journal!
This book was very good - even better than I expected. I appreciated the author's perspective, and think it honours both the survivors and those who perished.
